INTERNSHIPS IN
Mumbai, India
Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is an important economic and cultural hub on the west coast of the country. Known as the Gateway to India, it is one of the most populated cities in the world and is the host to a variety of thriving industries including finance, commerce and trade, and entertainment. The city’s long and diverse history is reflected in its numerous historic sites, from the Mahalakshmi Temple to the Gateway of India monument.
English is one of the four official languages, making it easy for students to explore. Enjoy the city’s festivals, concerts, museums, and more, and after a long day of work, relax on the beach. Whether you’re interested in art, business, STEM, or social sciences, Mumbai is a perfect destination for your GlobalWorks international internship experience.
Internship Duties & Sectors
Internship assignments vary and are highly customizable. Explore the dropdowns below to learn more about the unique characteristics this location has to offer for internships in each sector.
Art + Design
Serving as a cultural hub of India, Mumbai hosts the India Art Festival annually and is also the home of national museums, temples, and famous pieces of architecture that are well-known in the country. Contemporary art is thriving, too, and artists work in a wide variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, prints, photography, and videography.
Business + Accounting
Mumbai serves as the financial capital of India, similar to New York in the U.S. Located close to the land, sea, and air, it is a hub for national and international businesses alike. Students will be able to work at any number of companies or financial firms and see a thriving city hum. English is spoken widely in business, but students should still respect the local practices.
Education + Administration
Mumbai is an important educational hub in India, home to many universities, schools, and colleges. Several volunteer teaching opportunities are available. However, with English being an official language, TEFL instructors are not in high demand, but students may be able to find an opening in one of the city’s international schools or in an similar education-focused role.
Environment + Sustainability
Mumbai is standing at the front lines of environmental action with a plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The climate plan includes changes to transport, housing, water conservation and more. Nonprofits are also working to improve the sustainability of the food supply and preserve local biodiversity. Students will get to explore environmental issues in a city that’s at an important turning point in history.
Journalism + Communications
Mumbai has a thriving communications industry with thousands of outlets – across radio, television, newspapers, and more – generating content in several languages, including English. Students will be able to study a complex journalism landscape that faces some challenges to media freedom.
NGO + Nonprofits
Students who want to give back to the Mumbai community have a variety of causes to consider, including organizations that work to improve the lives of underprivileged children, those that provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid, and groups that are working to empower women and girls from poor and marginalized communities.
Social Sciences
Mumbai’s diverse history – with influences from the Mughals, Marathas, Portuguese, Dutch, and British – makes it a fascinating location for social science internships. Opportunities can be tailored to your specific major and industry interests.
STEM + Healthcare
STEM education is highly valued in India, and these fields are closely tied to Mumbai’s many industries. This city has India’s best public-health infrastructure but is facing a personnel shortage. Residents who can afford it tend to visit one of the city’s many private clinics, which generally offer higher-quality care. These clinics usually have English-speaking staff and are linked to universities or businesses.
*Please note that not all STEM and Healthcare-related internship placements earn 12 credits or last for 8 weeks.
