As the capital city of Japan, Tokyo and the surrounding metropolis constitute one of the largest cities in the world by population. From humble beginnings as a fishing village named Edo, and the capital of Japan since 1868, Tokyo now is an innovative city that is beloved by travelers and locals alike. It has a thriving business industry, and is renowned for its culinary delights (holding the most Michelin starred-restaurants in the world), has the most neon signs in the world, and the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world – Shibuya Crossing, which sees over two and a half thousand people crossing at once. Often touted for it’s futuristic stylings and technology, students visiting Tokyo will have an array of experiences to try and are sure to have an unforgettable experience.

For a long time, Tokyo has been a destination for corporate travelers, and continues to be an innovator in the corporate world. International businesses, like Honda, call this city home, but so do a growing number of small businesses that are sprouting up. Data Science is a field of ever-growing importance across industries. The need for workers in this field is growing exponentially, and students will be able to work at any number of businesses and organizations that will need research and analytical work performed.
Education + Administration

Social Sciences
Much of Tokyo’s industry is around tourists and tourism, with Japan hosting around 35% of all international tourists to east Asia in 2020. Interns can work in a field such as tourism, although they may also work in other fields such as politics, anthropology, sociology, etc.
STEM + Healthcare
Tokyo is the home to many cutting-edge technological developments, and was ranked the top Innovative City in 2018. Although tourists marvel at seemingly every type of vending machine or bars run by robots, the city is also known for practical innovations in automotive engines, television and electronic designs, and even infrastructure such as high-speed rails. Additionally, Japan has universal healthcare, so students in this field will be able to work at professional organizations and gain first-hand knowledge of other systems.
