Madrid
INTERNSHIPS IN
Madrid, Spain
Sometimes when a city is faced with hardship, it rebounds more beautifully than before. Such is the story of Madrid. After more than a decade of economic and political turmoil in the 2010s, Madrid has channeled its creativity to become a vibrant hub of local shops and creators alongside a flourishing tourism scene and an influx of young national and international immigrants.
As the capital of Spain, located right in the center of the country, Madrid houses the government offices as well as the headquarters for national financial institutions and the Spanish Stock Market. Culturally, Madrid has modern food, vibrant night life, forward-thinking fashion, unforgettable art and music, and a passion for football (soccer) that will certainly keep students entertained.
Internship Duties & Sectors
Internship assignments vary and are highly customizable. Explore the dropdowns below to learn more about the unique characteristics this location has to offer for internships in each sector.
Art + Design
With a renewed emphasis on local, small-scale creation and artistic expression, Madrid has an abundance of unique opportunities in the arts, theater, music, architecture, and product design for students interested in interning in Spain.
Business + Accounting
From startups to national financial headquarters, Madrid has a growing and robust business sector, not to mention the fact that it is where you’ll find the Spanish Stock Market, one of the busiest in Europe. Whether your concentration is in entrepreneurship, finance, OBA, marketing, or sports, you will be sure to find an internship that meets your interests and career goals in Madrid.
Data Science
Data Science is a field of ever-growing importance across industries. The need for workers in this field is growing exponentially, and students will be able to work at any number of businesses and organizations that will need research and analytical work performed.
Education + Administration
Madrid is a highly-educated and literate city, with several universities and a robust publishing industry. Spanish-speakers may choose to pursue an education intership, but many non-Spanish-speaking students can also find an array of public, private, and international schools and organizations where they can learn new pedagogical styles and curriculum.
Environment + Sustainability
Due to Spain’s location, it has four different regions (Atlantic, Alpine, Mediterranean, and Macaronesian) and is considered to be one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. In order to preserve this, there are over 70 million acres of protected land, which is roughly a third of the landscape. Interns will be able to contribute to this field and will likely work for organizations with goals of sustainability, conservation, and the protection of biodiversity.
Journalism + Communications
Madrid has long been one of the Spanish-speaking world’s largest and most significant publishing centers alongside Barcelona. Spain also has a free, albeit concentrated, press as well as a diversity of communications, marketing, advertising, and PR opportunities across industries. Its tourism sector and emphasis on local businesses make Madrid an exciting and dynamic city for students pursuing an internship.
NGO + Nonprofits
Madrid is home to many large and small NGOs and nonprofits in a variety of industries. Whether you’re interested in refugees, poverty and homelessness, food and sustainability, sports, arts and culture, religion, or international affairs — there is a placement in Madrid for you to make a big impact during your internship.
Social Sciences
As Madrid comes out of its period of turmoil, the recovery period is shaping up to be an exciting time of growth and opportunity. While tensions exist between young and old, urban and rural, Madrid presents a unique opportunity to intern in one of Europe’s most dynamic capital cities as a hub for economic, social, and political policy-making in Spain.
STEM + Healthcare
While not historically the case, Madrid is becoming much more tech friendly, partially due to its relative affordability compared to the rest of Europe. Amazon recently selected Madrid for its Southern Europe headquarters while Google has opened one of its three European Innovation Campuses there. At the same time, Madrid is attracting millions of dollars in tech start-up investment to fuel its entrepreneurial spirit.
*Please note that not all STEM and Healthcare-related internship placements earn 12 credits or last for 8 weeks.
