COURSES + CREDITS

Why do I need to take academic courses during my GlobalWorks international internship program?

The two required courses by GlobalWorks are designed to facilitate discussions and reflections during students’ international internship program to help develop their intercultural competence and achieve professional growth. Students will observe, investigate and engage with different core cultural values in themselves and others, conduct comparison and develop culture learning strategies, critical thinking and professional skills that are transferrable to future employments.

What are the two required courses?

How many total credits do I earn?

The number of credits vary depending on the type of program.

Program Type Online Intercultural Communication Internship
8-week onsite Choice of 1 or 4 8
4-week pre-med 2 or 4 3
Virtual (summer only) 0 4

Internship credit requires documentation of a minimum of 30 hours/week worked per 1 credit earned. Most of the GlobalWorks programs are full time, which means students work at least 30 hours per week.

What should I do if I want to count the internship credits toward my major requirement?

Students have three options for who can oversee the internship credits. Students will be asked to decide on their preferred option a few weeks before their program start date.

Option 1. Have a GlobalWorks instructional staff member be the internship course instructor. This option indicates that students wish to be registered for Pass/No Pass internship elective credits. A designated GlobalWorks staff member will oversee the internship credits and issue the grade. This is a good option for students who do NOT need credits from a specific department or a specific course number.

Option 2. Have a faculty of the students’ choice as the internship course instructor. This option indicates that a specific faculty member in a department has approved the internship and has agreed to oversee the credits and issue a grade. This is a good option for students who need credits from a specific department for major or graduation requirements. The faculty will need to provide the syllabus before the program starts and decide on the number of credits (up to 8) and the grade option (Pass/No Pass or Graded).

Option 3. If a faculty member only signs off for 2 or 4 out of the 8, GlobalWorks staff can oversee the rest of the credits to ensure students receive the maximum number of credits for their internship.

How do I decide which credit option works best for me for the online intercultural communication course?

Students can take the online intercultural communication course as a 1, 2 or 4-credit course. Each option has different workload. The 2-credit option is only available to students who are in the 4-week Pre-med program.

The cost of the program is the same no matter which credit option students choose.

The following students should choose the 4-credit option:

  • Students who are passionate about gaining a more thorough and in-depth understanding of themselves through intercultural communication and self-reflection
  • Students who need to use this course to fulfill their Global Perspectives (GP)/International Cultures (IC) or Social Science (SSC) core education requirement. The 1 or 2-credit option does not satisfy those requirements. Please check with your academic advisor if you do not know whether you still need those credits.
  • Students who need to have a full-time enrollment status to be eligible for as many financial aids or scholarships as possible. Some scholarships or financial aid require full time status, which is 12 credits for undergraduate students. The other GlobalWorks course (the internship course) you are enrolled in is 8 credits for most of the 8-week programs and 3 credits for the pre-med program. With both of the courses, GlobalWorks students will receive a maximum of 12 credits (7 credits for the pre-med program). Please talk to a financial aid counselor if you have questions regarding your financial aid situation.
  • Students who need to have a full-time enrollment status (12 credits for academic year) for any other reasons.

Please be aware the pre-med participants will not have full-time enrollment status during the GlobalWorks program.

Can I take other online courses during the internship?

Students will not be allowed to enroll in any other UO online courses during the internship program. Due to the intensive nature of your internship and the courses, students will not have time for additional coursework.

How do I register for the courses?

Students will NOT register on their own. GlobalWorks will register all students for credits before the program start date. The program fee covers tuition, travel insurance, housing, culture excursions and some group meals.
