INTERNSHIPS IN
Bangkok, Thailand
If you want to explore a city with an expansive canal system, historic architecture and a bustling crowd of international tourists, Venice isn’t your only option. Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has been rated the most visited city in the world. Whether you’re a foodie, sports fan or history buff, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
While Thailand was never colonized, Bangkok became a key port for spreading western ideas and materials. Today, it’s a medley of old and new, with vibrant markets, stunning Buddhist temples, and a palace situated alongside busy roads and high-end shopping malls. And if you don’t want to get stuck in traffic, catch the BTS Skytrain, which soars high above the pavement.
Internship Duties & Sectors
Internship assignments vary and are highly customizable. Explore the dropdowns below to learn more about the unique characteristics this location has to offer for internships in each sector.
Art + Design
Bangkok’s art scene is dynamic and continuing to grow with new art venues popping up in recent years. Artists in the area draw inspiration from a variety of cultures and both traditional and contemporary styles. While in Bangkok, enjoy the city’s architecture, street art culture, art galleries, film and theater scene and more. The Bangkok Art and Cultural Center, which opened in 2007, sees many hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and aims to foster cultural exchange.
Business + Accounting
With a growing economy, Bangkok is a great place for business students to intern. It has been a longtime center for trade and is known for its many industries and for exporting agricultural goods. The city’s business-friendly environment, which includes low taxes, is attractive to foreign companies. People from other countries should observe the local cultural business practices. For one, business in Bangkok tends to be more personal than in Western countries. Most interactions begin with both parties getting to know each other before professional matters are discussed.
Data Science
Data Science is a field of ever-growing importance across industries. The need for workers in this field is growing exponentially, and students will be able to work at any number of businesses and organizations that will need research and analytical work performed.
Education + Administration
While Thai is the primary language in Bangkok, English is so widely taught that Thailand is one of the biggest employers of foreign teachers in the region. Interns will get to experience Thailand’s approach to education, which makes time for fun activities in the classroom. Overall, education is less formal than in other countries in the region.
Environment + Sustinability
Thailand is one of the most biodiverse countries in southeast Asia. It is home to more than 15,000 plant species (representing 8% of the world’s total) and around a fifth of the forested areas protected and under conservation. Students in the environmental field can work for conservation organizations, businesses and assist with sustainable development, and more.
Journalism + Communications
Thailand’s communications landscape includes television, print media, and radio. There are also more than 20 million internet users in the country. The radio market is especially competitive in Bangkok with more than 60 stations in the capitol region. While some media outlets are privately run, others are operated by the military and the government.
NGO + Nonprofits
Students looking to intern with a nonprofit in Bangkok have a lot of options. Charities are tackling the city’s major problems, from poverty to natural disasters like flooding. Several nonprofits focus on helping children in need, including the Community Children Foundation, which is under royal patronage. Several organizations are addressing environmental concerns and wildlife conservation, and work is also being done to promote Thai culture.
Social Sciences
Bangkok offers the opportunity to explore the longstanding traditions of Thai society which are influenced by Buddhist beliefs. However, Thailand’s political structures have changed several times over the years, with the current government forming after a successful military coup in 2014. Sectors include government and politics, law, tourism, hospitality, development, environmentalism, food, and much more
STEM + Healthcare
Students interning in Bangkok have a wide variety of STEM fields available to them as these fields are closely tied to Bangkok’s many industries, including agriculture, that make up its economy. STEM education is on the rise in Thai schools. Thailand also has nearly universal health care coverage, which includes equal care to illegal migrants. This offers students from the U.S. a chance to explore a different type of health care system. Private clinics are also available at a cost to residents who can afford them.
*Please note that not all STEM and Healthcare-related internship placements earn 12 credits or last for 8 weeks.
