Pre-Med Shadowing in Spain and Italy

Pre-Med Shadowing in Spain and Italy

This Clinical Fellowship, which focuses on providing AAMC-compliant physician shadowing in an international setting, will take place over 4 weeks in Summer term.  In partnership with Atlantis, Fellows are afforded the opportunity to experience global healthcare with a group of other pre-health students, shadowing doctors in a different specialty each week for at least 20 hours per week.  Students will be assigned a site in Europe after commitment, based on group-size and available locations.

Students will shadow four days per week, generally between 9am – 2pm, although the hours will change depending on the day and hospital activity.  One weekday per week is reserved for an Atlantis-organized group excursion of cultural, regional, or historical interest.  Students will shadow in a variety of medical fields inside the hospital – some surgical but more often non-surgical. The internship is observational only, in accordance with AAMC and GASP guidelines (clinical skills are not practiced). In addition to the shadowing hours, students may have service-learning opportunities, depending on the site (for example, English teaching, assistance in pediatric or geriatric wards, etc.).

Shadowing opportunities for UO students are available in several small to medium-sized cities in Spain. Spanish language proficiency is welcome but not required.

Internship assignments vary. While internships help develop technical abilities, they provide more fundamental life skills. Interns will get an introduction to the professional world as well as the opportunity to gain career ready competencies in critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and global and intercultural fluency.

Students will enroll in 2 courses for a total of 5 quarter credits. For Human Physiology majors, three of these can count toward HPHY List C credits.

Course #1: GlobalWorks International Internship
This internship helps students connect their academic studies to practical applications. Students develop professional skills while gaining exposure to the dynamic culture and lifestyle in their host country.

Course #2: Intercultural Communication (online)
This course is designed to provide ongoing support to students doing internships abroad. Students will observe, explore and investigate the core cultural values in their host country during the internship, conduct comparison in the differences between their host and home country, and develop critical thinking skills and culture learning strategies. A weekly assignment for the online course includes: reading assignments, group discussions and a weekly journal. It will begin one week before your internship begins and end one week after completion. Due to the intense nature of interning, in addition to taking the 4-credit course, we recommend you do not enroll for any other classes during the internship period.

Students live in an apartment, hotel or dorm and often share a room with another student.

Minimum GPA: 3.0

There are no language requirements, though students with proficiency in the local language will have more internship placement options.

Estimated program costs and a detailed budget of projected expenses can be found on the Locations and Costs page.
